Our programs

From crisis to a home of your own.

Our work follows the path a survivor actually travels. Each stage has its own costs, and each one is a place where people get stuck.

  1. Escape
  2. Stabilize
  3. Rebuild
  4. Stay Free

Escape

Safe Start

Emergency assistance (§4.1)

Safe Start: the first few days

When someone leaves, the immediate needs are small, urgent, and expensive: a place to sleep tonight, a way to get there, a lock that works, somewhere to put what they could carry. We cover temporary lodging, emergency transportation, lock changes and door security, short-term storage, and immediate necessities. This help does not require a financial review. If someone is in crisis, the crisis is the qualification.

Stabilize

Home Again

Housing access (§4.2)

Home Again: getting into a home

This is the gap most people mean when they say they cannot leave. We cover security deposits, first and last month's rent, application and credit check fees, utility deposits and reconnection charges, past-due balances that are blocking a new lease, and moving costs. We also help with the search itself and speak directly with landlords on an applicant's behalf.

Rebuild

Strong Together

Stabilization (§4.3)

Strong Together: making it stick

An empty apartment is not yet a home, and the first months are when a new start most often fails. We provide beds, bedding, and essential furniture, kitchen and household basics, transportation to sustain a job, childcare costs that make work or a housing search possible, help replacing identification and documents, and coaching on budgeting and tenancy.

Stay Free

Stay Free

Referral and ongoing support (§4.4)

Stay Free: the part most programs skip

Getting someone out of danger is the first step. Helping them stay free is our commitment. We stay in touch for as long as someone wants us to: check-ins, referrals, financial literacy, and community. Entirely voluntary, and never a condition of anything else.

The same rules for everyone.

We use written eligibility criteria adopted by our board before we helped anyone. Every request is documented, every decision records the reasons behind it, and no one at the Initiative can direct help to a particular person outside that process, including our founders.

We pay landlords, utilities, and vendors directly rather than handing out cash. And no payment from this Initiative may ever go to a business connected to our founders. That rule is absolute, written into our governing documents, and cannot be changed without the unanimous agreement of our independent directors and an opinion from outside counsel.

If moving is what is standing in your way.
